October- Deep Run Library

October 1-4

We saw 3 classes for the Science Fair lesson and Research Stations
We collaborated with Mrs. Rogers classes giving tutorials to students on library equipment such as the laminating machine.
We planned collaboration with Mrs. Norris - Technology center
We graded Mrs. Latcovish's student's citations submitted in Noodle Tools and scored them according to the rubric she created for this project.
We planned for "Teen Read Week" and decided to film students doing "Book Talks".

October 7-11

We saw 3 classes for the Science Fair lesson and Research Stations
We participated in the Tornado Drill
We collaborated with the Social Studies teachers on a lesson that will use Google sites and hyperlinks.
We did research and planning for this project. See example of original project, which was a poetry project to spark teacher's interest in the lesson. Hyperlink project idea link
We planned for Librarians Mentoring Committee meeting and produced a lesson to share at the meeting.
We filmed students doing "Book Talks".
We hosted teacher training for the PSAT one morning before school.

Oct. 14-18

Deep Run students are featured on School Matters TV for a collaborative lesson with the library on Banned Books Week School Matters TV link to story
Mr. Clarkson brought in his classes for book check out this week.
Mrs. Matthew's used the library for her students to present their sales pitch power-points to their classmates
We planned for November Picture Book month
Mrs. Pierce's classes came in and worked on a project about letter writing during World War I, doing research from news archives, and information to share about that time period having artifacts to back up that information.















Mrs. Smart presented at the Librarians county-wide staff development on using weebly by showing other librarians the way she has used it.









We had students produce video book talks to show on announcements for "Teen Read Week"





We collaborated with Socials Studies teachers and planned a lesson using Google sites using hyperlinks showing them a model done on the civil war. The students will be doing research on Andrew Jackson's farewell speech. 

October 21-25

We created Scare-o-grams to sell during lunch as a Page Turners fund raiser. We will deliver them on Halloween Day. Each message will be delivered with a piece of candy. We are selling them for $1.00. The money we raise will help buy books for our Page Turners book club.


National Friends of the Library week is Oct. 21-25. We made teacher handouts for them to fill in what book they are currently reading to display on their classroom doors. 


We also invited study hall classes to come to the library for book check outs the last 15 minutes of the period. 

Mrs. Fuller brought all her classes to the library this week for research. They are starting a research paper that will be a persuasive essay either addressing the pro or con side of an issue. We showed them 2 great library databases where they should start their research. Issues and Controversies and SIRS researchers which are both located in :

We also taught Mrs. Fuller's classes how to cite sources using Noodle Tools and how to write annotations on each of those sources. We taught them to use these annotations to help them make note cards. 



October 28-Nov. 1

We held our monthly "Page Turner's" book club meeting after school on Monday Oct. 28th from 4:00 to 5:15. We discussed the book, City of Bones and shared snacks and activities to go along with the book. Students made their own temporary runes tattoos just like the character's in the book. 

We had a collaboration meeting with Adrienne Minock, teen librarian at Twin Hickory Public Library, to discuss ways we can work together. 

We met with Mrs. Carpenter's and Ms. Anderson's classes to work on their research papers. Showing them the same databases for Pro and Con Issues, helping them find articles on their topics. 

We met with Ms. Stockdale's classes and taught them how to use google docs and hyperlinks to present their  History projects on Andrew Jackson with lots of information. We made a civil war google doc to show them as an example of what they could possibly do.  Civil War example site

We sold scare-o-grams during all lunches Monday through Wednesday and delivered them on Thursday during extended study Halloween Day. 

We saw 44 classes in the library for the month of October.
