February - Deep Run Library

Feb. 3-7

Students took make up exams on Monday and were proctored in the library. The whole day was used for make up exams.
We worked with Mr. Dickey and his leadership classes on a project they will be doing to promote the library. They are working in two groups and will be in a competition "like the apprentice TV show". The librarians and administrators will be judging this project.

We worked with Mrs. Norris technology class on writing a research paper and thesis using APA style and format with citations using Noodle Tools.

Feb. 10-14

We worked with Mrs. Stockdale's classes to create digital  magazines that display the eras of the 1920's.
They will be working in groups and will chose from about 7-8 different scenarios that they will create their magazines about. Three of her classes will be coming in all week to work on their magazines.

Thinking we will be out of school for SNOW, the administrators surprised us with an early Valentines.

Feb. 17-21

Monday was scheduled as a staff development day but due to missed days from snow it will be a regular school day with students.
Tuesday morning we had a faculty meeting at 8:00 am.
Mrs. Norris brought in her class for research work this week and Mr. Battisti brought his class in too.
We went to watch the All Stars basketball game this week and supported our library friend Ethan Miller who eats lunch with us everyday. Go Ethan!

We worked with  2 of Mrs. Berry's classes on doing research for "The Holocaust" project and using Noodle Tools for citations.
We worked with 2 of Mrs. Matthew's classes this week doing the computer time line lesson. They came in all week to complete this lesson. Students worked in groups and went to websites for information and then added to the large timeline.

Feb. 24-28

We attended the secondary library quarterly meeting meeting after school on Monday at Tuckahoe Middle School from 4:15-5:45.
We expect to have a fire drill one day this week.
We worked with 3 of Mr. Clarkson's classes this week on a career research paper and writing a resume and cover letter for a job application.

We worked with 2 of Mrs. Gibson's classes on building a mix-book scrapbook where they give a character profile of a character they portrayed in the play.  Here is an example of the mix-book they will produce. This lesson was moved to the first week of March.

January - Deep Run Library

Jan. 6-10

We worked with Mrs. Rogers classes on using http://www.mixbook.com to build a story about student's childhoods scanning pictures with the library scanner to build their stories

We worked with Mr. O'Dell's classes to complete their mineral lessons using http://www.smore.com website to display their information. This class was a collaboration with Mr. Metcalf (ITRT), Mr. O'Dell (teacher), Ms. Caldas (collab. teacher) and Mrs. Smart (Librarian)

We worked with Mrs. Perego/Mr. Zimmerman's (long term substitute) class on a lesson about the History of Computing using a timeline and students had to do independent  research using our library databases and then add that information to the timeline and prepare for a speech presentation to their classmates.

We meet with Mr. Gouldthroupe to collaborate on a lesson for his Spanish II classes in March. We have decided we will use a Google tool called story builder to develop this lesson.

We also meet with Mr. Dickey and collaborated with him about a lesson for his leadership class. They will do a project where they have to promote the LIBRARY.

Jan. 13-17

We worked on the agenda and a presentation, through emails and phone calls for an upcoming meeting this week with our specialist and other secondary librarians in the county.  See video above.
We had a hide and lock drill this week for safety.
We read professional articles and emailed them to the committee chair person to include in our staff development librarians website.
Mrs. Smart recreated the computer timeline and laminated the new version for future classes.
Mrs. Lopez worked on student portfolios as part of her professional growth plan.
We hosted along with the PTA, who sponsored an author visit. Anne Westrick, author of "Brotherhood" presented to students in the auditorium.

Jan. 20-24 - Snow, Snow, and more Snow
Students were out of school all this week due to snow and icy roads. Exams were cancelled. 

Jan. 27-31- Snow Again!
Monday Mrs. Lopez and Mrs. Smart attended the unconference at Glen Allen High School. It was a conference about using technology.
Students were out of school for snow Wednesday and Thursday.
Students who wanted to take exams were given the chance to take exams on Friday and Monday in the library all day.
We read book reviews in School Library Journal magazine, and decided which books to add to our Titlewave book order.
We were scheduled to see on Thursday and Friday Mrs. Matthews classes to do the computer timeline lesson, These lessons will be rescheduled since we are proctoring make up exams in the library. 

We had  scheduled to have our book club, "Page Turners" meeting on Tuesday after school. We discussed the book "Graceling" by Kristin Cashore. We had a round table discussions with questions about the book. We will reschedule this meeting, since all afternoon events were cancelled for weather.

December 9-13

We continued to work with 2 of Mr. Clarkson's classes on their Poetry projects.
Mrs. Dickey brought in 3 of her classes for book checkout.
We continued to work with 3 of Mrs. Stockdale's classes on their Civil War project.
We had a collaborative meeting planned and rescheduled for early January with Mr. Gouldthrope about a January lesson with his Spanish classes.
We had a collaborative planning meeting with Mr. O'Dell about a lesson we would help teach on Minerals using a technology website such as www.smore.com to build a digital information flyer. Click on the example here:

We attended mandatory training on the new "Power School" that will take the place of WinSchool later this year.
Mrs. Smart and Mrs. Lopez both attended Library Committee meetings off campus after school, Virtual School Task Force and Mentoring committee meetings.

December 16-20

Mrs. Stockdale's 3 classes completed their Civil War learning stations lesson and rotated through all the stations in their groups. Here are a few examples of some of the stations:

We enjoyed the after school holiday celebration with all staff. All the library staff won door prizes.

We set goals for student checkouts and classes taught for our Specialist and worked on a data spreadsheet for our Specialist about the lessons we teach and programs we do in our library, which included Time Frame, Collaboration, Subjects, AASL Standards, Indicators, Benchmarks, and SOL's for all the lessons we teach and special programs we have in the library. We each had a spreadsheet of 8-10 pages. Here is an example:

We are negotiating with an author to come and  visit Deep Run.  Anne Westrick, author of Brotherhood  will speak to Mr. Dickey and Mrs. Stockdale's  classes in January. She will tell them about how she used primary resources while doing research  for her book and the Civil War and post-Civil War Reconstruction in the Richmond area. We emailed a link to a contest to win a copy of the book to our "Page Turners" book club.  To learn more about her book chick here:

November 1-8

November is National Picture Book Month. We celebrated by having teachers read parodies of books and showed them during Advisory time and then students answered questions about library services. Click on the link below to see the video:

We worked with Mrs. Oliver's and Mrs. Anderson's English classes on their 11th grade research papers and finding sources with databases and books, and using Noodle Tools for sources, citations, annotations, note cards, and outlines.

We worked with Mr. Dickey's History classes on the Enlightenment Period and students produced Round table discussion news cast to share with classmates, using cameras checked out from the library.

November 11-15


We continued to work with Mr. Dickey's History classes all week on their Round Table news cast projects.

Promoting Book Checkouts and 21st Century Technology

We worked with Mrs. Norris's technology classes showing them how to download a free APP on their smart phones to create their HCPS library card. Student's then tried it out by checking out a book. Watch the power-point presentation here : Power-Point, putting your library card on your phone

Top Ten Reasons to Checkout a Library Book- on the rolling announcements and big screen in the library each morning. Look in School Space for the power-point presentation.

Mrs. Lopez attended a committee meeting for librarians in which she is a mentor to a new HCPS librarian.
Collection development, book review center, Follett book vendor, blog reviews, school library journal, core collection list in titlewave developed by the core collection committee, e-books and public library catalog were all discussed in helping choose new books for our libraries.

November 18-22

We worked with Mrs. Dickey's English classes on the Russian Revolution project they started last week.

We worked with Mrs. Coleman's English classes this week, they came to the library and worked through the World War II Stations lesson.

We sponsored Open Mic night in the library on Thursday Nov. 21st from 4:00-6:00. Students recited poetry, sang songs, and read readings of their own choosing.

November 25 & 26

We held a "Page Turners" club meeting On Monday Nov. 25 after school to discuss the book, "The Rag and Bone Shop" by Robert Cormier. We had snacks, a discussion, answered questions and played the game of "Clue" since it went along with the theme of the book.
